This is a new TAL offering, for an authentication tool. This is being offered through EBSCO, but OpenAthens is from Eduserv, a part of Jisc. TAL is offering this through EBSCO as EBSCO will provide the support for this tool.
TAL is looking to see what institutions might be interested. The response date and subscriptions are flexible; a minimum subscriber base for a small discount is 5 institutions. So if there are at least 5 libraries interested, we will coordinate this to accommodate the needs of the group. We realize some may be interested but not in a position to move forward, and so we would appreciate knowing what institutions might be interested and what the preferred timeline is.
TAL has no intention of discontinuing EZproxy. All libraries that continue to use TAL hosted EZproxy are welcome to do so. This is being offered as an alternative authentication mechanism for those interested.
OpenAthens is an authentication mechanism for remote access to electronic resources. Developed by Eduserv, this is being offered through EBSCO. This will be supported by EBSCO.
OpenAthens is software that offers single sign-on access for end-users saves information professionals the hassle of managing multiple credentials.
OpenAthens is meant to simplify authentication:
Easy access with one username and password
With OpenAthens, users only need to authenticate once to access all your e-resources, saving them time and frustration.
Statistics and data:
Gather detailed usage statistics. Learn access and search patterns to better understand users’ needs, and make the most of your resources.
OpenAthens single sign-on technology allows only your authenticated library patrons to access your e-resources.
Log in from anywhere
Users can access your e-resources from anywhere using their mobile devices or computers, all through the EDS single search box.
Seamless account management:
Once user accounts are set up, administrators have access to an easy-to-use dashboard to manage users and access.
If you are interested, please contact Christa Foley to arrange for a meeting with EBSCO to obtain more information and a quote.
The response deadline provided is March 1, 2019. Libraries are asked to contact me by March 1 if there is any potential interest and let me know what your intentions. 5 libraries are required to participate for the small discount level so we will work with interested libraries on a timeline that works for all.
