Please find below resource(s) available for Renewal
This is the renewal invitation for Curio.ca from CBC for the period September 1, 2019 through to August 31, 2020. Five products are available with a new product becoming available soon:
Curio.ca, News in Review, L'Actualité en revue, National Geographics (English) and National Geographic (français).
New to this offer is the BBC Channel (anticipated in September 2019). Members may choose to add this product to their existing Curio.ca subscription.
These are all available and require their own subscriptions. To be clear, News in Review and National Geographic are not included in the base Curio.ca subscription (some were under that impression).
Pricing for Curio.ca is based on the total number of FTEs across the participating universities and colleges - the FLE price has not changed over last year. Individual institution price changes will vary as pricing is based on current enrollment.
This offer is currently being offered to academic libraries. A separate offer will be sent for public libraries.
Attached below is a product flyer from the vendor.
This is a Consortia Canada negotiated product, led by BCI.
New for 2019-2020:
The CBC has obtained distribution rights for content from the BBC. They are currently in the process of loading this content on their platform. They anticipate that it will be available in September 2019. This does mean though that there are no trials available until it launches.
Here is the official description that was received from the CBC:
We are extremely pleased to announce a new BBC specialty channel on curio.ca that offers a wide range of titles in English and French from the UKʼs public broadcaster, a world leader in innovative storytelling. Content will delve into international history, social justice, earth and space science, medicine, animal behaviour and technology. Also among English-language programs in the channel are short animated and liveaction segments from BBC Teach, ideal for the elementary educator.
BBC Channel: $0.12 per FTE

From the Vendor:
Curio.ca gives teachers and students streaming access to the best in educational video and audio from CBC and Radio-Canada. You'll find documentaries from television and radio, news reports and more — all available with a single subscription!
Our collection features thousands of programs and hundreds of teacher resource guides carefully curated to support provincial K-12 curricula and post-secondary courses across the country. Curio.ca gives teachers and students 24/7 access to a wealth of primary-source content in English and French. It’s a great tool to help students develop critical-thinking skills. Every week, we add new content selected for its educational relevance, always commercial-free, including the latest from CBC’s award-winning documentary, news, drama, and children's programming (e.g. The Nature of Things, The Fifth Estate and The National).
Functionalities include :
Metadata for easy integration into course systems
Options to embed and share content
Ability to create multiple playlists
Content - CBC/Radio-Canada has been actively adding material to Curio over the past year. A reminder that CBC/Radio-Canada has to pay to acquire the rights to programs: even though programs are broadcast on CBC that does not necessarily mean that they own the rights ; in most cases independent producers make documentaries and shop around for distributors and thus retain their rights.
MARC records are available.
Closed captioning is available.
Late subscriptions are permitted, and their pro-rated pricing will be based on the cents/FTE for the main subscription to Curio.ca.
If you would like to subscribe or cancel a subscription, please respond with your decision to Christa Foley firstname.lastname@example.org AND Michelle Boychuk email@example.com no later than Friday, July 26, 2019. It is important to send new join requests, changes or cancellations to both Christa and Michelle because of holdidays; we do not want any changes to be missed. Current subscriptions will be renewed if cancellation notice is not provided by July 26.
For new subscribers: Please note that each participating institution must select the number of profiles that it wishes to have set up for its clientèle for the Curio.ca product. Each participating institution receives one (main) account under the account of their consortium. Each participating institution can then request a number of accounts to be set up for each professor, who can then set up their individual profile so as to be able to prepare play lists for sharing with the students in their course(s). Library staff may also wish to set up a few accounts, for training purposes. A limit of 2,000 accounts for professors/staff per institution. Names (professors/staff) are not required at the time of subscription.
Each subscribing library can produce their institutions' usage statistics from within Curio's admin module. Below are the links to guides and tutorials. The guide refers to an "access code" used to create an account. Your institution's access code is available upon request.
