This is a new TAL/Consortia Canada offer. COPPUL is the lead.
The Royal Society is the United Kingdom’s academy of sciences and has been publishing journals dating back to 1665.
There are 3 packages in the subscription offer:
Package S: all journals
Package A: journals in the physical sciences
Package B: journals in the biological sciences
In addition, there is also a Read and Publish (R&P) offer which includes a subscription (Read) fee and a publish fee based on the average of the last two years of APCs. The Royal Society launched transformative agreements in January 2021. These agreements allow researchers to publish with no APC fee at the point of use. R&P agreements enable corresponding authors to publish papers as open access without paying an article processing charge as the charges are covered by their library. Royal Society has a goal to flip 75% of its research output to OA within the next five years. OA75 commitment* : Biology Letters, Interface, Proceedings A, and Proceedings B to a fully open access model when 75% of articles are being published open access. https://royalsociety.org/news/2021/05/royal-society-open-access-plans/
An Open Access Membership is available to schools directly.
The Royal Society describes itself as an "Independent scientific academy of the UK, dedicated to promoting excellence in science for the benefit of humanity."
An active subscription provides access to the complete Royal Society journals archive, 1665-present (list provided in the response sheet) Perpetual access to years institutions are subscribed to. Perpetual access to the journals archive is also available.
This offer has two options and one additional individual school option:
Subscription to either Package S, A, or B
Read and Publish deal on Package S (and some flexibility to do it on A or B on request)
Add-on option: Schools who want to support OA but are not ready to move to Read and Publish can set up an individual Open Access membership direct with vendor. Contact Graham Anderson Global Sales Manager E: email@example.com to discuss pricing.
Read and Publish (R&P)
The Royal Society launched transformative agreements in January 2021. These agreements allow researchers to publish with no APC fee at the point of use. R&P agreements enable corresponding authors to publish papers as open access without paying an article processing charge as the charges are covered by their library
The R&P model looks at the package price + average paid APC + any applicable OA Membership fee. There are no ConCan institutions paying an OA membership fee currently, so for the model this year, there are two fee components: the reading fee and the publish fee.
How the R&P fee works: The reading fee (subscription fee) will match our ConCan subscription deal. We are suggesting doing the R&P deal on the Package S so that authors have access to all the Royal Society journals for publishing, but if an institution wants to participate in Package A or B, we can provide that flexibility. As an incentive to transition, the reading fee for this year is being held at the 2021 rate. Royal Society follows transparent pricing so that they take into account OA fees in determining pricing. For more details on transparent pricing: https://royalsociety.org/journals/librarians/purchasing/packages/transpa...
The second component is the publish fee based on the average activity from the past two years. For these details please see the 21-22 Consortia Canada Royal Society journals offer details excel. There are 3 sheets with costs. One sheet has the basic information on the offer. Sheet two has details for institutions that Royal Society has determined may be interested, based on current subscriptions and/or Open Access activity. The third worksheet has details on the specific APCs paid per institution from 2019 and 2020. Royal Society converts the APC costs to USD. The full cost of APCs are applied to the corresponding authors. Similarly, statistics on OA activity in articles is shown on the corresponding authors only.
Determining how much was published non-APC: If your institution is interested in exploring the R&P option, Royal Society can run another report that details all the publishing done by an institution. This would be useful as a predictor to future costs when all articles are costed as OA as part of the Publish component of the model.
