Criterion Pictures for Public Libraries

Please find below resource(s) available for Renewal

License Begins:

November 1, 2022

License Ends:

October 31, 2023
Preamble:

Criterion Pictures offers non-theatrical public performance licenses for feature films on an annual subscription basis.   The movies that are licensed through Criterion are dependent upon the Studio and/or Producer.  The list of Studios/Producers licensed by Criterion for public performance can be found at:

http://www.criterionpic.com/CPL/lcl_studiosproducers_new.html

A license with Criterion Pictures enables your library to offer public performances of feature films from the licensed Studios/Producers.  Only those films licensed by Criterion are covered under this Criterion license.

There are three different license options available:

  1. Home-release license
  2. Pre-release license
  3. Pre-release license plus Criterion on Demand

None of these licenses allow library patrons to access these films from home. Remote access is not available.  Films are to be shown only on-site in the library.

Prorated Mid-term joins will be accepted for December & January. Midterm joins after that on case-by-case basis and may need to be superrated.

Updates:
Additional Description:

There are three different license options available for public libraries:

1.    Home-release license. This provides libraries with copyright protected access to more than 15,000 feature films released to the home video market. Pre-release titles are not included. Home release does not mean that library patrons can access films at home; rather, this refers to titles that have been released to the retail home DVD market.

2.    Pre-release license.  Includes the right to use all Criterion titles currently available on home video IN ADDITION to exclusive pre-release movie selection. A pre-release title is a feature film that is available in advance of the home video date.  NOTE:  Pre-release titles may be obtained from Criterion.

3.    Pre-release license plus unlimited access to Criterion on Demand. Includes pre-release and home titles as well as feature films through Criterion on Demand. Includes children's films, literary adaptation, Oscar nominated films etc. Criterion on Demand is a site to be used for public library staff to select films for public performance. It is not to be used by library patrons for home use at all.  Criterion on Demand access is via the web platform and there is no patron or off-site access.

No MARC records.

Currently, most subscribing TAL libraries have home release subscriptions.

Monthly reporting was previously required. The vendor agreed to waive the monthly reporting requirements.

However, there is a separate schedule and reporting required for when admission charges are applied; reporting is directly to Criterion Pictures as follows, and cannot be waived:

Each time an admission fee is charged during the exhibition of a feature film from one of the Producers on the attached Schedule “B”, a box office report must be completed and returned to Criterion Pictures once the Licensee has recouped the cost of the License, via by fax or mail, according to the following procedure:

Criterion must be called prior to the screening in order to send a box office report form.  Please use the 1-800 number. The box office report must be completed and returned to Criterion Pictures, along with the payment of 35% of the proceeds, within seven working days.

All viewings must take place in the library.

Late Subscription:

Late joins WILL be accepted. (This may change over the course of the year)
