The Alberta Library (TAL) is pleased to share its 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, presented to members at the Annual General Meeting on April 30, 2026.

The Plan builds on the strengths of TAL and its members, setting a renewed direction focused on strengthening collaboration, building capacity, and advancing collective impact across Alberta’s library sector.

Libraries across Alberta are navigating increasing demand, evolving expectations, and ongoing capacity pressures. At the same time, opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and shared impact continue to grow. This Strategic Plan reflects that reality, and the opportunity it presents.

The Plan was developed through a comprehensive, member-driven process, including engagement sessions, sector analysis, surveys, and interviews across TAL’s membership. Throughout this process, a consistent theme emerged: the need for stronger coordination, shared solutions, and collective action.

The Strategic Plan positions TAL as a connector across Alberta’s library landscape, supporting collaboration, scaling shared work, and enabling collective impact. Through this role, TAL helps ensure that libraries can work together more effectively, reduce duplication, and strengthen the sector as a whole.

The Plan is organized around five strategic directions:

Over the coming years, members can expect:

  • Continued, strong central services such as licensing and accounting
  • Increased opportunities for collaboration across sectors
  • Shared tools, resources, and practical outputs
  • Expanded professional development and capacity-building supports
  • Stronger, coordinated advocacy and sector visibility

This work is already underway and will continue to evolve through ongoing member participation and engagement. TAL looks forward to working with its members to bring the Strategic Plan to life.
