Friends of the Library groups play an important role in supporting and strengthening libraries throughout Alberta. Through advocacy, fundraising, volunteerism, programming support, and community engagement, Friends groups help amplify the visibility, sustainability, and community impact of libraries across the province.
A number of Friends groups from across Alberta have expressed interest in connecting more regularly to share ideas, resources, challenges, and successful practices. This initiative is currently being coordinated by Graeme Matichuk in a volunteer capacity through his involvement with Friends organizations in Alberta, including the Friends of St. Albert Public Library.
In response to that interest, The Alberta Library (TAL) is helping support the development of a collaborative peer network for Friends Groups across Alberta.
As part of this work, TAL is pleased to help provide connective support for the network by:
- Helping interested Friends groups and library staff connect with one another.
- Sharing information and opportunities through TAL communication channels.
- Providing access to a contact form for inclusion in a network contact list coordinated through the Alberta Friends of Libraries network.
- Highlighting resources that may assist libraries and communities interested in developing or strengthening Friends groups.
The Alberta Friends of Libraries network is intended as a collaborative space for peer connection and shared learning. TAL’s role is to support communication and coordination opportunities while enabling participating groups and individuals to shape the direction and activities of the network over time.
IF YOUR FRIENDS GROUP, OR YOUR LIBRARY, WOULD LIKE TO STAY CONNECTED WITH THE ALBERTA FRIENDS OF LIBRARIES NETWORK, PLEASE COMPLETE THE FORM BELOW.
Information submitted through the form will be shared with network volunteers supporting communication and collaboration activities. Questions regarding the contact list or form may be directed to Graeme Matichuk at alberta@friendsoflibraries.ca. You can also access the form here.
This initiative aligns with TAL’s 2026 – 2030 Strategic Plan, particularly TAL’s commitments to:
- Strengthen connection and collaboration across Alberta’s library network
- Build capacity, confidence, and professional growth throughout Alberta’s libraries
- Amplify the collective value and impact of libraries within their communities
TAL will continue supporting collaborative initiatives that strengthen Alberta’s libraries and the communities they serve.
Resources for Friends groups are being compiled and will soon be shared through TAL. In the meantime, these resources can be accessed for free at matichukinsights.ca/friends.
